The most succesful Czech band abroad right now. Colours Promotion has cooperated with Gipsy.cz right from the beginning. It´s an original mix of roma music, hip hop and pop and it´s becoming more and more popular not only in Europe.

The leader of the band is Romany rapper and singer Radoslav ‘Gipsy’ Banga, who has been performing onstages since the age of thirteen. The co-author of the Gipsy.cz project, Vojta Lavicka, known from his former work with Deep Sweden and Alom, lays violin and sings. The other band members are bassist Jan Surmaj and Petr Surmaj on guitar and accordion. The band excel in energetic live performances that are spiced with a good dose of distinctive humour and irony. Last summer, they performed as the fi rst Czech band at the famous festival in Glastonbury and also appeared on many other stages throughout Europe. Gipsy.cz’s video for ‘Romano Hip Hop’ made it all the way to the European MTV hit parade, World Chart Express. The band won the 2006 Anděl award in the Discovery of the Year category as well as many other prizes (ALMA 2007, Filter magazine 2007, etc.). They were the first band from the Czech Republic to climb their way up into the WMCE top ten charts. Last year, Gipsy’s front man became the ambassador of the EU campaign the ‘European Year of Equal Opportunities’.

New album Reprezent: Gipsy.cz have gone from strength to strength with many lively and rewarding experiences since the successful release of their debut and ‘gold’ album ‘Romano Hip Hop’. ‘Benga Beating’ opens the new album ‘Reprezent’. This fi rst brisk dance piece with its strong melodic motif is immediately followed by the song ‘Barvoslepej svět’, on which Gipsy.cz augment their traditional attributes of freshness, grace, humour and originality with a genuine concern for social issues of our times. These themes run through the entire album. “We decided on mainly selecting songs with an actual ‘message’.” In expressing these concerns, the band are both confronting and overcoming the xenophobic barriers that they see in their own struggle. Since the recording of their debut, ‘Romano Hip Hop’, Gipsy.cz have kept the same lineup, which is naturally refl ected in the harmony and spirit of the entire album. There are 14 songs in total, with the total length of 43 minutes. The CD was recorded in the renowned SONO studio. Compared to ‘Romano Hip Hop’, the new album ‘Reprezent’ has a much more refi ned and colorful sound. This is complemented by the presence of a number of outstanding guest musicians such as Josef Feco (viola, double bass), Milan Kroka (guitars) or Camillo Caller (percussion).
