With a brand new repertoire and sound, Traband is starting the new part of its existence and since the beginning of the year 2007 it has appeared on the stage again – and again as a “threefold band”.
Traband 2007
Wild “brass techno” lovers may miss clamorous Balkan rhythms and raging solos; on the contrary, admirers of quieter and more lyrical songs and interesting sound combinations are going to enjoy just their cup of tea. The key instruments now are Jarda’s harmonium and Jana’s “bass-and-guitar”. After an omnivorous period, when the Trabandits adopted almost any music style, they come with an effort to look for inspiration in the home landscape. World music is changing to home music. This time, the main source of inspiration is Bohemian and Moravian folklore music, village church singing, and home music making. Lyrics, which are less epic, often capture wandering through countryside, seeking home and nature motifs.
New Traband CD is called Pritel cloveka(Man’s Friend, Indies Scope Records 2007). Jarda Svoboda says: “The name “home music“ is not so much the definition of a style as rather the expression of opposition to what is called the “world music“ today. All the music, which patches together carelessly everything it comes across, folk songs from anywhere, in the best way from the Balkans, adds to it the functioning rhythmic or something else, non-homogeneous, without internal relations and connections has been getting on my nerves recently… I realize that we contributed to this properly in the past and at one moment I started to find it quite disgusting. I love, when the things are authentic, when the inner matters can be felt from them. That is why we returned to the home music making, to home resources and traditions. It is like looking into your own wallet and saying to yourself: Well, so how much do I have?“
As well as on all albums by Jarda Svoboda, also here the great lyrics dominate and they are the constant, which is not changed in the Traband production – Intelligent songs with catchy tunes and excellent lyrics. However, this time the themes of the lyrics are changed, when on the last record called Hyjé! they reflected more the surrounding state of things, now they turn more to the man’s inner feelings.
